Allen Injury Update plus Bucs Preseason Preview
Let’s start out today with the biggest news of the evening… yesterday we pointed out that cornerback Will Allen had to sit out practice due to pain in his knee, and word came today that he actually had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Thursday, the same one he blew out last October. Allen has been a starter for the last three and a half years for the Dolphins, so while this is a blow to them for sure, it hopefully doesn’t have a long-term effect since the front office expects him to be back in time for the season opener. Whether that will happen or not remains to be seen, so the Fins made a counter move today by signing Kevin Hobbs to a two-year deal. Rookie Nolan Carroll could also pitch in if Allen is out longer than anticipated.
Allen may have been the big story for the day, but the Dolphins have bigger issues at hand this weekend with their first preseason contest of the year vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Sun Life Stadium. Head Coach Tony Sparano announced today that Chad Pennington would not play in the game, which comes as no surprise since he alluded a few days earlier that he did not need to see the veteran as much in action as he did Tyler Thigpen and Pat White. They have more to prove, and they will get all the chances in the world to do so.
Another thing to look for this Saturday is how the defense looks following their impressive scrimmage last weekend. The Fins have a new defensive coordinator, Mike Nolan, and it will be interesting to see if they continue all of the blitzing they did in the scrimmage and come up with a multitude of sacks as they did last Saturday. In terms of the match-up itself between the Dolphins and the Bucs, it will also be interesting to see how the two vastly different systems play out against each other on Saturday and how all the new pieces in the Dolphins system come together for the first time on the playing field in competition.
The Miami Dolphins are less than 48 hours away from their first preseason action of the 2010 NFL season – can you believe it, Fins fans?
