Fins Make More Moves During the Offseason
Is it just me, or is every offseason in professional sports centering around Miami these days? First you have the hometown Dolphins shaking things up by making a trade for wide receiver Brandon Marshall, and then going and grabbing one of the biggest fish in the market with the signing of inside linebacker Karlos Dansby. Of course, Dansby didn’t announce his signing in an hour-long ESPN special as new fellow Miami resident LeBron James did last week when he signed with the Heat (and we sincerely thank him for that), but when it comes to making an impact on the field, both are sure to carry just as much hype into the NFL season that “The King” will bring into the NBA campaign later this year.
So we know the Dolphins picked up some big-name talent in March and April, but what else have they been up to since then? I guarantee you the front office hasn’t been resting on their laurels, seeing as how each of these guys only make up 1/11th of their respective teams on that side of the ball. Joining Marshall on the offensive side, Chad Pennington returns for another year to mentor the young, up-and-coming QB Chad Henne. Pennington went from running the club in 2008 to his current role as be-ready-when-called-upon mentor to their QB of the future. I’m sure it’s not every guy’s goal in life to be the No. 2 option, but it was still a good pick-up for the Fins when he re-signed for a year back on March 8. Henne and Pennington also got some extra protection with the additions of Cory Procter and Richie Incognito to an already fierce offensive line. And, Dansby got another inside linebacker to play with when the Fins acquired Tim Dobbins in a draft-night trade, a player the team has had their eye on for awhile.
Of course, these offseason pick-ups don’t even mention names like nose tackle Jason Ferguson (who will sit out the first eight games serving a suspension), corner Will Allen, running backs Ronnie Brown and Patrick Cobbs and linebacker Channing Crowder, all of whom spent time on the sidelines last season due to injury but are looking forward to returning to the field in tip-top shape in 2010.
