Signing of Rookie John Jerry
It was just a day ago that we at MiamiDolphinsTickets.com were lamenting over the Dolphins’ three draft picks that were unsigned, but yet another draftee “bit the dust” today when the Fins came to terms with guard John Jerry, their third-round selection (73rd overall) in the 2010 NFL draft.
The 6-5, 328-pound Jerry played in 49 games at Ole Miss, an SEC rival of Dolphins fifth-round draft pick Reshad Jones’ collegiate school, the University of Georgia. Both were elite players in the talent-laden SEC, as Jerry was a four-year starter for the Rebels, starting in 12 games as a freshman, nine as a sophomore, 13 as a junior and 12 as a senior. All of his collegiate starts came at either the right guard or right tackle position, and he racked up 323 tackles with 34 touchdown-resulting blocks as a starter and blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher in each of the 2006, ‘07 and ‘09 seasons.
Jerry, who is seen as a long-term starter in the Dolphins organization, is yet another rookie who could see significant time on the field in the 2010 season, as he is expected to convert to the left guard position following the trade of veteran Justine Smiley to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The right guard position will likely be occupied by Richie Incognito, while Donald Thomas and Nate Garner (who shared the job last year) will compete for time and a starting role on the left side as well. Veteran Cory Procter, who has a long-term relationship with both Bill Parcells and Head Coach Tony Sparano, should be in the mix as well.
With Jerry's signing, the Dolphins are now left with two unsigned draft picks, who coincidentally happen to be the first two they selected – first-round pick Jared Odrick and second-rounder Koa Misi. Word around Dolphins camp is that both Odrick and Misi have been offered contracts and are “working through them” as we speak. All indications are that both sides will come to an agreement before training camp opens in just nine short days.
