Dolphins Rise Again Amid Adversity
When the Miami Dolphins started the season 0-7, there were many adjectives being thrown around about the team – none of which describe them today. If we would have told you that now, just a little over seven weeks after the team’s final loss in that streak, that people would be using words like resilient to personify this Miami Dolphins squad, you probably wouldn’t have believed us. But how else can you describe a team that has gone 5-2 since such a deflating start to the season? Just like their season has turned around, the perception of this Miami Dolphins team has also completely changed over the course of the past two months. In my mind, the most admirable quality about the 2011 edition of the Miami Dolphins is that they don’t quit. Even when they were mired in that seven-game losing streak, you often heard the announcers talking about how hard the players were playing. Just about everything that could go wrong for this team has in fact gone wrong – they lost their starting quarterback, and management decided to forego signing a big name in favor of going with a second-stringer (which I must say has worked out quite well for Miami, probably better than anyone could have imagined); they lost a number of games in the fourth quarter; and most recently, they lost their head coach. Yet after losing Chad Henne, the team rallied around Matt Moore. After losing back-to-back games by a combined six points in weeks 7 and 8, they rattled off three straight wins. And, after losing their head coach just this past Monday, the Fins went on the road into division rival territory, and amid a slippery field with snow coming down, they managed to come out victorious once again.
Each time these Miami Dolphins have faced a hurdle, they have jumped – they didn’t walk around the hurdle, or even half-heartedly attempt a jump that couldn’t clear the hurdle. No, they’ve jumped higher and higher each time, and with seemingly nothing left to play for this season, these Dolphins are continuing to jump – and in the process, they are showing the entire sports world exactly what a team that doesn’t quit looks like.
While the Fins have won five of their last seven contests, they will be facing quite possibly their highest hurdle of the season this Saturday when they take a trip to New England to face the Patriots. Miami fell to New England, 38-24, in Week 1 as QB Tom Brady threw for over 500 yards in that record-breaking contest. The Dolphins will be seeking to avenge that loss and will look to get new interim Head Coach Todd Bowles his second win in as many weeks. Will you be there to see it live in person?
