Marshall, Long Selected to Pro Bowl

The NBA and MLB might select their top players to showcase their talents in the middle of their respective seasons, but the NFL chooses their top talents at the end of the year to play in the Pro Bowl. And while “I’m going to Disney World” might be one of the top catch phrases in the world, “I’m going to Hawaii to play in the Pro Bowl” surely has a nice ring to it as well, particularly to two Miami Dolphins players.

Brandon Marshall and Jake Long have both been selected to represent the AFC at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu on Jan. 29, 2012. Long was selected in his fourth Pro Bowl as a starter while Marshall, who made the trip two previous times when he was with the Denver Broncos, was picked as a reserve.

Marshall, who ranks 10th in the NFL in yardage, leads the Fins with 77 receptions this season, accounting for 1,177 receiving yards and six TDs. In a press release issued from the team, he stated how satisfying this honor was considering the difficulties the Dolphins have had on the field this season.

“This selection is special, considering the struggles we had this season,” Marshall said. “I appreciate the fans who voted for me, and it means a great deal that I also was voted to the Pro Bowl by the people who know the most about the game — the players and the coaches. I also want to thank my teammates, because football is the ultimate team game and I couldn’t have performed at the level I did without their help.”

Long, who has now been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his four seasons in the NFL, won’t be available to play in the game due to an injury he sustained in the loss to New England last Sunday. Injuries have been a problem for Long all season, as he hasn’t played at his full potential for the majority of the year, but his production was still good enough to warrant him being selected with Cleveland’s Joe Thomas as a starter at the tackle position.

One player for the Fins who was left out of the voting was Reggie Bush. Bush is having a career year for Miami with 1,086 rushing yards, which ranks ninth in the NFL, but he failed to make the roster behind Baltimore’s Ray Rice, Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew and Arian Foster of the Texans.
