Dolphins Sign Suh

The Miami Dolphins’ season doesn’t officially begin for another few months, but for Fins fans, the unofficial start to the 2015 campaign began with the start of free agency. And with that unofficial start came a new beginning, and a new era, for Miami, as they welcomed in Ndamukong Suh as the defensive face of the franchise for the Miami Dolphins.

The Suh signing surprised nearly everyone around the NFL in several ways – Miami didn’t even appear to be on Suh’s radar, and the sheer size of the contract (reportedly $114 million with $60 million of that guaranteed) is one that has made many eyes pop (but also answers the question as to how the Fins got on his radar). That dollar sign is the biggest for any defensive player in NFL history, and it undoubtedly serves as Miami’s biggest signing, monetarily and figuratively speaking, in franchise history.

Suh, who is a three-time first-team All-Pro and former No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, will be anchoring a defense that will likely leave many opposing offensive coordinators shaking their heads. Along with Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon, the Miami Dolphins’ defense certainly got a lot better over the next six years with one stroke of a pen. For example, in 2014, the Fins ranked 24th in defending the run, while Suh’s Detroit Lions came in first. In the last five years, Suh has led all defensive tackles in several categories, including tackles (239), sacks (36) and disruptive plays (50 percent).

So what does that mean for the rest of the Miami Dolphins? Suh has said that he’s excited to play with quarterback Ryan Tannehill and that he “respects” him, as he has been hard to take down in past games. But Miami knows that even if you can stop opponents from putting points on the board, you still have to tack on some to your side as well, which is why it will be equally as important for Tannehill to have an excellent offseason and make significant strides next season so that Miami can be seen as a relevant team again, especially with all of the offseason moves in the stacked AFC East.

The 2015 NFL schedule has yet to be released, but as soon as it is, stay tuned to for the best selection of what will surely be the hottest tickets in town!
